"Nanoparticle Optical Barcodes - A Biological Application of Quantum Dots"

Thomas Liptay

For many biological applications there is a desire to be able to perform medium density (~1000) assays with high throughput for a variety of applications.   In order to assess the viability of using nanocrystal based (instead of dye based) barcodes we have created a model of NC barcodes that is grounded in what is currently achievable using CdSe nanoparticles incorporated within microbeads.   We find that the number of codes is much bigger than the 100 currently available with dye based commercial technology available from Luminex Corp., but is much less than the 1 million codes that has been mentioned in the literature.   Our analysis shows that NC-based barcodes have the potential to fill the need for medium-density high throughput biological assays.
